First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has been ushering in the holiday season all week long. From sharing the festive Christmas decor at the White House to the unveiling of the first South Lawn ice-skating rink in over 40 years, the Bidens are ready for a magical month of December. On Sunday, Dec. 3, they celebrated the 46th Kennedy Center Honors and the first lady made a sparkling appearance to honor this year’s recipients, Billy Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick.
What makes this fashion choice special is that it is not only the perfect color for the holidays, but it also appears to be a Ralph Lauren rewear from earlier this year. The gorgeous long-sleeve dress shimmered from every angle with its stunning crisscross design down the front. It cinched at Jill’s waist as the fabric then flowed down to the floor — a perfect silhouette for the first lady.
The gown made its first appearance in June at the White House state dinner for India’s prime minister Narendra Modi. It was a formal event, so the first lady opted for neat bun and a fancy swoop in front with her curtain bangs. For the Kennedy Center Honors, she softened the look with a half-up, half-down design, proving that one dress can provide a variety of styles for dressy occasions.
Jill has favored the American designer quite a bit since Joe Biden took office in 2021. It’s allowed her to explore some vivid colors with his designs — we loved the cornflower blue suit she wore to King Charles III’s coronation — and represent U.S. fashion on a global stage. Her green-gown rewear also sends a message that she understands the economic challenges the country is facing. Jill could have worn a brand-new ensemble, but recycling something from a wardrobe is both practical and smart.
