Elizabeth Taylor was considered one of the last living entertainment icons tied to old Hollywood, but what many didn’t realize is that she was also connected to many A-listers who are still working today. One of those famous faces who struck up a sweet friendship with her was Demi Moore.
Moore, who had experienced her own tumultuous time with drugs and alcohol while in the public eye, developed what author Kate Andersen Brower described in her book, , as a “lasting” relationship possibly born out of the “media speculation and criticism” they both faced. Brower spoke to Moore for her book, who reminisced about sitting in Taylor’s bedroom one day and getting a sneak peek at her storied jewelry collection.
“I had a combination of reverence and almost being in two places at one time,” Moore recalled in an excerpt from the book. “One part of me felt like a kid who was in complete awe and the other was just sitting woman to woman.” The moments they shared were lifetime memories for Moore, but she had some regrets after Taylor’s passing in 2011, according to Brower.
“When I talked to Demi Moore and Brooke Shields, they both told me they wished they had known her better,” the Brower told SheKnows exclusively. “They knew her. They were friendly with her. They wished that she had been a mentor to them a little bit more. Not that Elizabeth wasn’t friendly to them, but she wasn’t going to go out of her way necessarily because she didn’t see that as her role.”
Taylor was always willing to help “if you were going through a rough time” and were “vulnerable with her,” but “she wasn’t necessarily going to reach out.” Brower added, “Elizabeth rode solo. She did not have a lot of women in her life.” It’s something that Moore seems to have recognized after Taylor died, which left her wishing “she had done more” for her friend. Being a Hollywood icon can be one of the most isolating and lonely experiences, which Taylor probably felt more than anyone ever knew.
