Dick Van Dyke has been a part of all of our lives, whether Mary Poppins was your favorite film growing up or you binged the Dick Van Dyke Show at dinnertime with the family. And in just a few days, the acting legend will be celebrating two momentous occasions: his 98th birthday on Dec 13 and the upcoming CBS special Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic, which is set to premiere on Dec 21.
Ahead of the big days, Christina Karlin shared a series of videos and photos to her Instagram story, which was obtained by Page Six. In these uploads, we see him channeling his iconic character Bert, a chimney sweeper, from the classic 1964 musical Mary Poppins.
Specifically, we see him briefly reenacting the iconic chimney sweep dance, with his wooden cane in hand.
For those who don’t know, Mary Poppins stars Van Dyke and Julie Andrews, and it follows a magical nanny who helps neglected children become closer to their busy father. It’s about as heartwarming as it gets, and it’s full of wonderful songs. The two stars actually became best friends after meeting at the auditioning process, and Andrews later wrote about him in her 2008 biography Home: A Memoir of My Early Years. “He was dazzlingly inventive, always in a sunny mood, and he often made me roar with laughter at his antics,” she said.
Now, as we previously said, the Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic special will air on Dec. 21, and will stream on Paramount+.
Per What to Watch, Van Dyke talked about the special earlier, saying, “I started with CBS under contract in 1955 with the CBS morning show, then The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder. I’ve been with the CBS family for almost 70 years, and I couldn’t be prouder. I’m incredibly honored that CBS will be throwing a 98th birthday special for me. Can’t wait to be part of the show!”
