The timeline of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s departure from the United Kingdom and subsequent step back as senior members of the royal family has a new detail. Amid Harry’s libel lawsuit against The Mail on Sunday, new evidence entered was submitted to strengthen Harry’s claims. The piece of evidence in question is an urgent letter written by a significant member of the royal family back in 2020.
Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary, Sir Edward Young, penned the late monarch’s letter that was later submitted to U.K. cabinet secretary, Sir Mark Sedwill, per a new report from The Sunday Times via People. Queen Elizabeth felt it was “imperative” that Harry and Meghan retain “effective” security, regardless of their standing with the royal family. “You will understand well that ensuring that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain safe is of paramount importance to Her Majesty and her family,” reads the letter.

“Given the duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into the royal family, his military service, the duchess’s own independent profile and the well-documented history of targeting of the Sussex family by extremists, it is imperative that the family continues to be provided with effective security,” an excerpt from the letter reads. During their time as senior members of the royal family, and even since, Harry and Meghan have been the subject of immense scrutiny to the point of unsolicited threats.
The late sovereign’s words, as written by her secretary, read in such a declarative and clear manner that it’s difficult to argue just how much Queen Elizabeth II wanted her grandson and granddaughter-in-law to be protected as they entered into a new chapter of their lives. Time will tell what type of impact this letter will have on Harry’s case. But it’s clear that the threats Meghan and Harry were dealing with were so severe that the queen wanted them to be safe and protected regardless of their station.
