It’s that time of year again when the British press begins to tally how many engagements the royal family participated in. It’s also when the anti-monarchists voice their criticism against some senior royals who seem to struggle with having a “work ethic.”

In 2022, Kate Middleton found herself of the receiving end of those concerns because she only completed 90 appearances in 12 months. This year, she stepped up her game to 128 engagements, according to the Sunday Telegraph, but she lagged far behind all of the other family members in senior roles. The clear winner was Princess Anne who is considered the “hardest working member of the royal family” with 457 engagements, which was 32 more appearances than King Charles III. Prince Edward came in third with 297 engagements, then Queen Camilla in fourth with 233. Prince William was fifth with 172 and Kate was in the last spot.

While the Wales’ workload did increase in 2023, they have reportedly felt burdened with the additional job responsibilities from their new titles while trying to raise a young family. The changing palace dynamics with the exit of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, along with the death of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, had a “huge impact on [Kate and William’s] marriage and family life.”

A source revealed to Closer magazine that it’s been a huge adjustment for them. “At times it can feel like they are cracking under this relentless pressure,” the royal insider explained. “With less time at home together and having to spend more time apart, they feel constantly torn apart in different directions and they insist that wouldn’t be happening if Harry and Meghan hadn’t abandoned their royal duties.”

The Sussexes have been gone for three years, so they really can’t be blamed for the current work situation. However, King Charles has to figure a way to balance the needs of the monarchy and tend to the expectations the British have of the royal family. Princess Anne cannot carry the entire palace on her back, so other people will have to step up and help out if the royal family wants to keep in their critics’ good graces.
