The second half of the final season of The Crown dropped on Netflix on Dec. 14, and Carole Middleton might not be pleased with her portrayal. The Hollywood version of the royal family‘s history leans heavily into the rumors that she was the pushy stage mom who made sure Kate Middleton got plenty of face time with Prince William.
The series hones, not only on Kate’s switch from Edinburgh University to University of St. Andrews, but also Carole’s orchestration of getting her oldest daughter onto the same Chile expedition as her future husband during their gap year. There have been whispers for years that Carole set the Princess of Wales up for success so that she could be a royal family member, and The Crown is running away with that narrative.
The fashion show with Kate’s famous sheer dress plays a role in the final episodes, and gives viewers delicious lines for the very Kris Jenner-like moment. “Heels not flats, you still want to show off those legs. It’s our duty to make use of the assets God has given us. Does he know you’re back on the market? Maybe find a way of letting him know,” advises the character of Carol, played by actress Eve Best, ahead of the fashion moment. But The Crown isn’t the only recent headline in the press to talk about Carole’s meddling behind the scenes.
Omid Scobie’s recent book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, also implied that Carole was pushing Kate up the social ladder to make the royal fairy tale come true. “Carole set things up, and Kate took it the rest of the way,” he wrote in the biography. Let’s just say Carole and the rest of the royal family are probably ready to put 2023 behind them because it’s been nothing but scandals, books, and TV shows telling their story, while they maintain an air of silence.
