Whether you follow the sport of gymnastics or not, you are likely aware that Simone Biles is the GOAT — greatest of all time. No one else can match her record-breaking 37 medals, 27 of which are gold. However, her husband, Jonathan Owens, seems to act like he had no idea who she was when they first met on the dating app, Raya, in 2020. This shocking revelation came to light in a podcast interview with his wife sitting right next to him.
The 28-year-old Green Bay Packers safety and the 26-year-old gymnast sat down with The Pivot to talk about their newlywed life after getting married in April. While it seems unfathomable that as an athlete, her name never entered his orbit, Owens tried to rationalize his excuse. “When she won the Olympics, I was in college, and we didn’t have NBC, we didn’t have Olympics channels, and we were in [training] camp in late July, early August,” he said. “So I’m not paying attention. I never had a moment where I would have watched [her perform].”
Explaining that Biles messaged him first, he noticed that she “had a bunch of followers” on social media. Owens added, “So in my mind I’m like, ‘OK, she’s got to be good.'” Since they met during the COVID lockdown era, Owens had her drive “about 45 minutes” to meet him at his home. Some of these details didn’t sit well with fans of Biles already, but it took a turn for the worse and got everyone riled up.
Host Ryan Clark jokingly asked Owens if he thought he was “the catch” in their marriage. With Biles’ epic career, we all know the answer to this question. However, the football player decided to insert his foot in his mouth. “I always say that the men are the catch,” he remarked.
“So she really booked you,” Clark added.
“She did, though! Because I was fighting it,” Owens said of his Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient wife. “I was afraid to commit… but you know, it happens when you least expect it.” And let’s just remember, Biles is sitting next to him through this conversation.
Owens might not want to check his notifications today because the internet has some thoughts. One X user wrote, “We only know of him as Simone Biles husband sooooo.” Another account heatedly added, “Saying you’re a catch just bc she did something for a date is a choice, especially when she’s beautiful, famous and extremely talented. I feel like he wants to humble her” And there’s one person out there who thinks Serena Williams’ husband needs to enter the chat, writing, “Simone Biles’ husband needed to buy one of those coaching sessions with Serena Williams’ husband and ask him how to be a good husband to a GOAT athlete. Alex Ohanian does it well.”
Owens might treat Biles like gold behind closed doors, but his very public chatter has fans waving red flags. It’s an uncomfortable to watch a husband seem so comfortable belittling his stunning, successful, and world-class wife. Biles seemed to take it all in stride, but plenty of other people are crying foul for her.
