Dolly Parton may be the only person who can claim she turned down a royal invitation for a good reason. Most celebrities would probably clear their schedule to make time to sit down with Kate Middleton and enjoy a spot of tea, but the Queen of Country had to think like a business leader with this decision.
The 77-year-old legend sat down with BBC Radio 2 in August to discuss her new album, Rockstar. Journalist Claudia Winkleman was curious as to whether Parton would be able to enjoy the sights of London while she was visiting, and that’s when the musician dropped a bombshell. “This time, Lordy, I even got invited to have tea with Kate [Middleton], and I felt so bad… I couldn’t even go! They had all this stuff set up,” she shared, via People.
Parton joked that “she wasn’t going to promote my rock album, so I had to say no,” but it truly was a business-savvy decision on her part. For any royal fans who might be worried that the country star was slighting the future queen, Parton clarified the details of her story to Saga Exceptional magazine recently.
“I only had one full day and I did not have a second to do anything else besides work. But make sure people know I didn’t turn the invitation down,” she noted. “I was honored and flattered that she even asked me.” Parton does hope to meet up with the Princess of Wales because their mutual passion in early childhood education definitely aligns.
“So maybe that’s what we can talk about when we do have tea. I think she’s adorable and I hope someday to be able to sit down and have a good conversation with her.” We can’t wait for the epic photo opportunity between the Queen of Country and the future Queen of England.
