Despite all the pomp and circumstance of the day, the coronation of King Charles III was very a much an important event for the monarch and his family. It was, in many ways, a family occasion. And nothing truly demonstrated that more than a touching moment King Charles shared with his younger sister, Princess Anne, in behind-the-scenes footage from the day.
In a clip from the new BBC documentary Charles III: The CoronationYear, Princess Anne is seen in her full coronation day regalia, complete with hat, plume, and more. She walks into a separate room, where her older brother receives the finishing touches on his garb. As Princess Anne walks in, she looks her brother up and down and seemingly says, “Hello, Old Bean.” You can watch the clip HERE.

At that moment, King Charles takes his sister’s hand in his, kisses it, and the two start giggling as if they were kids all over again. For all the seriousness of the day, this moment between two siblings really reminded us that this is a family, one with nicknames for each other and close bonds. Then again, we’re not all that surprised Princess Anne and King Charles shared such a tenderhearted exchange.
With all the scrutiny and fixation on the coronation, not to mention all of the lead-up coverage concerning whether or not Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle would attend, the day itself must have been met with at least some stress. And while King Charles always knew this day would come, it was certainly still a daunting and emotional prospect, regardless. Thankfully, having his little sister around surely helped.
Born in 1948 and 1950, respectively, King Charles and Princess Anne are the eldest of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s children. They’ve witnessed a lot of change and experienced a number of ups and downs over the last several decades. But on such a significant occasion as her older brother’s coronation, it’s no surprise that Princess Anne’s playful nickname for King Charles was able to ground him and make him laugh, relieving at least some of complicated emotions of the day. After all, that’s what siblings are for, royal or not.
