Andy Cohen & Anderson Cooper Couldn’t Keep It Together in a Purr-fectly Absurd Moment With John Mayer

New Year’s Eve felt like it was back in a big way with Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper up to their old shenanigans after a network-mandated, alcohol-free event the year before. The dynamic duo imbibed in a couple (or more) of adult beverages throughout the live broadcast and that’s where the fun really began. While it wasn’t as sloppy or tea-spilling as prior years, John Mayer‘s cameo from Japan certainly merited a memorable moment during the New Year’s Eve Times Square special.

The 46-year-old singer was at the Cats in the Box cafe in Tokyo, and he played the part perfectly with his straight-faced demeanor throughout the segment. While Mayer had orange tabbies crawling around him on the bar, Cohen joked, “This doesn’t look sanitary, John!” But Mayer stayed with the bit in his deadpan response, “I believe it passes all health codes, so I think it’s just fine.”

Cohen, and especially Cooper, couldn’t keep it together and that’s when the CNN anchor’s signature giggles made an appearance. While Mayer was seriously trying to describe the bar, the TV personalities were doubled over with laughter. The “Gravity” singer impressively kept the moment going as Cooper, shuffled off the screen. “He’s gone, he’s off with the fairies here,” quipped Cohen. “Just the shot of the cat’s ass in your face is making him delirious.”

Of course, social media had to chime in with their thoughts on the absurd hijinks happening on their TV screens. One X user described it as “totally unhinged” while another account noted, “If i can enjoy anything in 2024 as much as anderson is enjoying seeing john mayer at a cat cafe.” And of course, viewers couldn’t forget Mayer, writing, “My 2024 energy is John Mayer in a Tokyo cat cafe.”

The fun and celebratory broadcast felt lighter this year after CNN’s former CEO Chris Licht barred Cohen and Cooper from any on-air libations in 2022. After the network executive was ousted in June 2023, it was the Watch What Happens Live host who campaigned very publicly to relax the alcohol ban. “It’s New Year’s Eve!” he told E! News reporter Justin Sylvester. “[The no-drinking policy] didn’t go well last year in terms of viewer happiness. People really cared and I hope CNN gives the people what they want.” Not only did Cohen get his way, but the viewers were thrilled that Cooper’s giggles were back in full force.
