Oprah Winfrey & Gayle King Credit These Qualities as the Reasons Their Friendship Has Lasted Decades

Few celebrity duos can say they set the gold standard when it comes to friendship. Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King‘s relationship, however, has seriously stood the test of time. The women opened up about their decades-long friendship in a new interview, crediting the longevity of their bond to a few particular qualities.

When you’ve been friends with someone for almost 50 years, you don’t mince words. “She is a blunt truth-teller,” King said of Winfrey during their conversation with The New York Times. “Even if you don’t want to hear it.” From what they verbally communicate down to their body language, it’s almost as if these two women have developed a unique language all their own.

“Sometimes we’re both thinking, ‘I want to stab myself in the eye with a fork right now. Oh, my god. Why am I here?’” Winfrey — again, not mincing words — said, referencing some events the two will attend. “A couple of times Gayle has said, ‘Should I hand you my fork?’” With just a look, these two ladies can communicate exactly what they’re feeling and know almost precisely what to say.

For decades, King and Winfrey have stood by one another. The two women constantly support each other, whether it be career triumphs or personal milestones. And they’ve been doing so for roughly 47 years. According to the Times, King and Winfrey met back in 1976 when they were both working at a TV station in Baltimore. One night, a major snowstorm hit and King couldn’t get home. Winfrey offered King a place to stay and the rest, as they say, is pretty much history.
