Princess Diana was always known for her kindness and including people who were sometimes marginalized into the royal fold — it’s a huge part of her incredible legacy. Now, a 1980s pop icon is sharing how the Princess of Wales displayed remarkable grace toward him at a time when he was shunned by many of his music industry colleagues.

Culture Club’s Boy George shared a sweet story about the royal in his new memoir, Karma: My Autobiography. The now-62-year-old singer recalled how his addiction to heroin and subsequent recovery was a big stigma at the time. In an excerpt obtained by People, George revealed that he was invited to a charity event just after he was out of rehab and Princess Diana just so happened to be in attendance.

He described his reputation as “ragged” at the time, but that didn’t stop the Princess of Wales from trying to meet him. A royal official made sure he was “shooed away” when he tried to get close to the princess. He left discouraged until Diana “broke protocol” and approached the pop star. Of course, the fashion icon took note of George’s colorful outfit.

“That must have taken forever,” she said.

“I didn’t do it myself, love,” he cheekily replied. He then introduced Diana to his mother where “they spent 10 minutes chatting” and “she told Mum I was a true survivor.” That graciousness is what defined Diana’s reign as the Princess of Wales and it’s why she will forever be called the “People’s Princess.” Diana knew how to make everyone around her feel special while rebelling against the palace’s wishes.

Diana understood her pivotal role in the royal family, even after she divorced Prince Charles. In her controversial Panorama interview with the BBC’s Martin Bashir, she talked about how she wanted to move forward as a public figure. “I think the British people need someone in public life to give affection, to make them feel important, to support them, to give them light in their dark tunnels,” she explained. “I see it as a possibly unique role, and yes, I’ve had difficulties, as everybody has witnessed over the years, but let’s now use the knowledge I’ve gathered to help other people in distress.”

Princess Diana was a true gem.
