Aubrey Plaza’s Yellow Emmys Gown Is Being Compared to This Iconic Sex and the City Moment

Aubrey Plaza decided to take a big fashionswing when it came to her Emmys dress on Monday night. In a sea of black velvet gowns, it was refreshing to see the White Lotus star in a pale-yellow outfit by Loewe. However, it was the silhouette of her red-carpet ensemble that had the internet talking.

The dress was structured to be a simple column design, but it had an unexpected bodice with a square cut and an oversized gold pin sticking through it. It’s definitely high fashion, possibly high camp, but all that Twitter could see was a Post-It note. Of course, that’s when the memes began, including one from an iconic scene in Sex and the City. In Season 3, Episode 15 titled “The Post-it Always Sticks Twice,” Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, gets dumped by Jack Berger, played by Ron Livingston, via a little yellow paper square after a romantic evening together. The character wrote in all caps, “I’m sorry, I can’t, Don’t hate me.”

An X user decided to take it upon themselves to add the Sex and the City text to the square on Plaza’s dress, creating a meme that went viral during the ceremony. (See the photo HERE.) Of course, there were other comparisons about the 39-year-old nominee’s gown, including a square of Kraft singles cheese, a pat of butter, and even a pin cushion. The Parks and Recreation star hasn’t commented on the internet frenzy her wardrobe caused, but she honestly looked stunning in the outfit. With her dark locks swept halfway back and a pop of dark lipstick, this was a conversation piece for her first Emmy nomination. It’s high art and pretty darn chic!

The Sex and the City writers should also be proud that this storyline still resonates almost 26 years after it was written. It’s become the pinnacle of bad breakups. Show writer Liz Tucillo told ELLE, ahead of the scene’s 20th anniversary in 2018, how they came up with the concept for Carrie’s office supply dumping. “We had the fun of just talking about the worst breakups that we had and then that ends up in the show—you know, our most humiliating experiences,” she shared. “I don’t remember exactly how it came up that it was a Post-it, but I’m sure it had something to do with us talking about the most dismissive way to get broken up with.”

Hopefully, Plaza appreciated that her gown became a hot topic at the Emmys, and now that she’s the face of Loewe, there might be more quirky fashion moments to come. If Anna Wintour is paying attention, there’s probably another Met Gala invite in her future.
