Kate Middleton’s Latest Setback Puts Her Royal Plans on Hold Through Easter

Kate Middleton‘s new year is off to a different start than many people expected. On Wednesday, Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales had undergone a “planned abdominal surgery” at The London Clinic the day before. Her anticipated long recovery will take her through the winter months and into early spring, according to the royal statement.

“The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” the statement continued. “Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.” While the press release was understandably vague about her medical situation, People magazine confirmed that “the issue was non-cancerous.” The royal communications office also noted that Kate “appreciates the interest this statement will generate,” but for now, she understandably wants privacy.

“She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the statement added. “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.” The Princess of Wales also apologized for having to “postpone her upcoming engagements” and hoped to reschedule her appearances at some point in the future.

The update about Kate’s health should also quiet the royal critics, who have been wondering why the royal hasn’t been seen since the holidays. After her children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, returned to school the second week of the year, fans were wondering when they would see Kate and Prince William next. It’s not unusual for them to scale back their royal appearances during their kids’ holiday breaks, but the silence notable from their camp this year — and now we know why.

There have been rumors of more International travel for William and Kate in 2024 with Rome, Italy being one of their destinations. There were also reports that the couple wanted to spread the word about their missions: William’s initiative to help the unhoused and Kate’s early childhood education plans. “They’re extremely supportive of each other and each other’s work. William takes huge pride in what Kate’s achieving from an early years perspective and likewise, she’s a huge follower in what the prince has done this year on Homewards and Earthshot,” a source told People.

This setback for Kate will likely change their focus for the first quarter of the year, but her health is the most important issue at hand. Hopefully, Kate will have a swift recovery in the bubble of privacy that she’s asking for.
