Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood hit the arrival carpet last night for the Sundance Film Festival. Everyone from Jodie Foster to Robert Downey Jr. was on hand in snowy Park City. But among all the celebrities, one person grabbed our attention — and her name is Malia Obama.
The 25-year-old commemorated her first major Hollywood red carpet event last night. Malia posed for a series of photos upon arrival at the Sundance Film Festival’s Short Film Program and smiled brightly. She looked confident, comfortable, and very bundled up in a gray coat and matching scarf. We think she handled the event like a total pro.
Malia was on hand for the premiere of the short film The Heart, which she wrote and directed. (NBD, right?) This marks Malia’s first foray into directing, having already worked on the Amazon Prime Video series Swarmas a writer. Fun fact: for Swarm, Malia chose to be credited as Malia Ann, not Malia Obama. It seems this is the name she’ll be using as long as she’s working in Hollywood professionally, probably as a way to distance herself and her work from her parents’ endeavors and their own productions.
In a video package in which the daughter of former president Barack Obama introduces the film, Malia refers to The Heart as an “odd little story, somewhat of a fable about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will.” The film marks Malia’s directorial debut, and she already seems poised to capture the hearts and interest of a number of Sundance attendees.
In the closing remarks for the video package, Malia shares her hopes for The Heart. “We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are,” she says. We cannot wait to read the reactions of Malia’s first short film.
