It’s hard to know where exactly Prince Harry and King Charles stand since the 39-year-old severed ties with the royal family back in 2020 but it looks like their potentially fraught relationship wasn’t enough to stop Harry from making a joke about his father during a recent speech.
Harry was presented an award at the Living Legends of Aviation Awards in Beverly Hills, California. The former royal was honored for his work as a British Army veteran and pilot in an award presented to him by fellow pilot John Travolta.
The father of two spoke about his service, his time as a pilot and even reflected on his first ever flight in an upbeat anecdote that involved his dad, the current reigning British monarch.
“I think I was maybe seven or eight years old in a Wessex helicopter, and I jumped into it so excited. And then my father jumped in behind the controls and I was terrified,” Harry told the audience, according to Entertainment Tonight.
The joke was a welcome break from reports of a rift in the royal family. Harry is reportedly not on speaking terms with his older brother, Prince William, since the release of his bombshell memoir, Spare. In it, Harry accused his family of several mistreatments and even detailed an alleged physical altercation with his brother.
Harry has appeared to do his best to keep the peace with his father by being present at key events including Queen Elizabeth’s funeral and King Charles’ coronation.
Reports in late 2023 suggested Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, were hoping to reconcile with King Charles in the new year. However, more recent claims have hinted it is King Charles who is holding back on mending his relationship with his son and grandchildren.
Harry’s joke about his father is a lighter note amid the King’s ongoing health issues so perhaps a reconciliation could be on the cards after all.
