In many ways, 2023’s undisputed movie of the year Barbie is all about female friendship and how when women come together they can find themselves and defeat their enemies (aka the Kens). So, of course, we couldn’t be happier to hear that the movie’s star America Ferrera has her own army of female best friends rooting for her too.
Following her historic first-time Oscar nomination this morning, Ferrera received a call from none other than her best friends and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn. “They FaceTimed me as a group right away,” Ferrera told Variety.
“It was hilarious and funny and emotional and it’s wonderful to be celebrated and held up by my sisters,” Ferrera, who recently won the SeeHer Award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, continued. “These women who I’ve had the honor of growing up with in this industry and being loved and cheered on and supported by them. Which we all do for each other. They’re amazing, and such a gift in my life.” So sweet!
Most of all, it seems like Ferrera is feeling the love, from her former co-stars and beyond. “It’s an overwhelming amount of love and support and congratulations to me,” she told the outlet. “I feel it so deeply and am so grateful for their love and support and in this moment. It’s been a long Barbie journey — I mean longer even for Greta [Gerwig] and Margot [Robbie] and Noah [Baumbach], it’s been years and years and years — everyone’s really excited that we get to celebrate and to end this journey at the biggest party of the year.”
Despite her major win, however, Ferrera couldn’t help but address the surprising snubs of Robbie for Best Actress and Gerwig for Best Director. “I was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated,” Ferrera said.
“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera explained. “Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”
As for Robbie’s performance, Ferrera had only raving reviews for the actress’ transformation. “What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable,” Ferrera said. “One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look and perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen, and it was one of the honors of my career to get to witness her pull off the amazing performance she did.”
“She brings so much heart and humor and depth and joy and fun to the character,” she added. “In my book, she’s a master.”
Despite the upsetting snubs, we hope Ferrera will be celebrating her win tonight!
