Kelly Clarkson Gave a Major Clue About Whether She’ll Ever Bury the Hatchet With Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson might be thriving in her single era after separating from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock in 2020 but it still doesn’t look like she’s going to be on good terms with his kids’ father anytime soon.

Clarkson firmly stated that she’s not in favour of being friends with an ex in a clip from The Kelly Clarkson Showthat was shared on Tuesday, January 23. In the video, Clarkson and her guest, Common, debated the topic of maintaining a friendship with an ex and it looks like Blackstock shouldn’t be expecting a friend date with the singer any time soon.

In his stance, Common, 51, said he could “definitely” do it and stated that he kept a friendship with “a lot” of exes in the past when their relationship ended on good terms. “I mean, we go through stuff at the beginning of the breakup, but then once we come to our grounds it’s like, ‘We good people. We cool people,'” he said before turning the question over to Clarkson, 41, to ask if she was friends with any exes.

Clarkson firmly responded, “No,” prompting her audience to burst into laughter. Flustered, Clarkson elaborated further.

“I mean, here’s the thing. I’m not not friends … but I feel like, ’cause I’m cool with … I only have a couple that I’m just like, ‘Hard pass.’ But a couple of them, you know, I don’t have many exes, but a couple of them are cool people. Nothing wrong with them. If we ran into each other, we’d be totally friendly. But that’’ the difference,” she explained.

Common then quizzed the host about whether she would accept an ex’s invitation to a party to which she said that she would, “depending on the ex.”

“I just feel like it can get awkward. It depends on who ended it or who it is. It’s situational. But for mostly, no. No, no,” she emphasized while laughing. “I feel like that’s awkward.”

Clarkson has also been increasingly outspoken about the problems in her marriage, including the recent revelation that she never wanted to get married. “[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person. Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it. It can happen; it doesn’t have to happen,” she told People in January interview.

Clarkson and Blackstock, who share two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander, split in 2020 after seven years of marriage. The contentious divorce battle was finalized in 2022 with Clarkson winning primary custody. She was also ordered to pay her ex a one-time payment of $1.3 million and $45,600 per month in child support. Clarkson also recently completed her court-ordered monthly spousal support payment of $115,000.

In November 2023,  Clarkson won a lawsuit against Blackstock in which a court determined that her ex owes her more than $2.6 million in commissions she paid to him for getting her business deals while he served as her manager. It was ruled that Blackstock has unlawfully procured the deals.
