Robert Downey Jr. Attributes This Drink for His ‘Sanity’ in His Journey With Addiction

Over the years, Robert Downey Jr. has been open with fans about his journey to sobriety. And, as any person who once struggled with addiction could tell you, getting sober isn’t an easy straightforward journey, and the struggles continue for years even after changing your lifestyle.

For Downey Jr., who was recently nominated for the Supporting Actor Award at the Oscars for his role in Oppenheimer, he’s had plenty of people and things to rely on to help in his journey. Talking to People recently, for example, the actor attributed one specific drink to keeping him sane. “I credit coffee, in part, for my sanity,” he told the outlet.

In fact, coffee is a big part of the actor’s morning routine. “I roll out of bed, I hit my knees. I have one of several prayers, usually of gratitude or just being like, ‘Please let me stay out of my way’ and then I roll downstairs for coffee,” he explained.

Downey Jr., who also just launched his new coffee company, Happy, says his wife, Susan Downey, also knows the drill. “When we have some big day ahead of us, she’s like, ‘Wait, wait, wait, don’t talk to him yet,'” he said. “And she’ll bring me a cup.”

Just last year, during the An Afternoon With Robert Downey Jr. event for LA3C, the couple, who have been married since 2005, opened up about the one conversation they had that totally changed the Iron Man star’s battle with addiction.

“It was the clearest conversation I’ve ever had in my life,” he remembered. “You know when someone is being so clear with you with something you go, ‘There is zero wiggle room here’?”

He concluded, “Ultimatums work.”

“They only work if the person’s ready,” Susan said in return, to which he cheekily replied, “You make me ready.”

Kudos to them for being honest and open about all of it.
