Remember that “Markle Sparkle” everyone talked about when Meghan Markle joined the royal family? Well, it still exists in this world, just not at the palace. The Duchess of Sussex’s former Suits costar, Abigail Spencer, had sweet things to say about their time working together and why she believes the show’s resurgence has been such a mega-hit.
The Extended Family star shared her thoughts on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, via People, and gave a “layered” opinion about the legal drama series and it’s second-wind success. Spencer noted that it’s hard to ignore the worldwide attention Meghan has received after marrying Prince Harry, so when it became available concurrently on Netflix and Peacock, fans tuned in. “I think there’s several different things,” she noted. “And also Meghan’s loveliness, you know, that everyone is aware of her and her being on the show.”
The 42-year-old actress acknowledged that the double strike that occurred last year as the WGA and SAG/AFTRA battled the Hollywood studios likely had some impact on viewership, but she turned the attention back to the Sussexes and their impact on the show. She pointed out that Netflix is Harry and Meghan’s home, so the algorithm probably boosted Suits for visibility. “You know, Netflix repositioned it, so I think there is something to positioning on Netflix and when other things aren’t being made, it commands your attention, but it has to be great for people to watch it,” she added.
Spencer’s observations come on the heels of Nielsen revealing that Suits beat a record in 2023 that had been previously held by The Office for the number of minutes watched in a single year. The former USA Network series was viewed for 57.7 billion total minutes in 2023 compared to The Office‘s 57.1 billion minutes watched by viewers in 2020, according to Variety. Suits was the top show — new or old — across all streaming networks last year. The show ran from 2011-2019, which for a prime-time series that hasn’t aired a new episode in almost five years, it’s big Hollywood news.
It’s an impressive number that has studio executives looking to expand the Suits universe with a spinoff taking place in Los Angeles. We know Meghan isn’t looking at a return to acting, but we are sure Hollywood would love a bit of her magic to make it a success.
