In 2020, Meghan Markle invested in a small business that had some royal watchers scratching their heads. Why would the Duchess of Sussex be interested in a brand that makes instant-drink mixes for plant-based lattes? Well, Meghan has a big answer for any of her critics because Clevr Blends is headed to the king of retail, Target, according to Modern Retail.
Meghan made a smart move early on by gifting an assortment of the superlattes to Oprah Winfrey in December 2020. The media mogul made an Instagram video about the “basket of deliciousness” and a new star was born in the beverage industry. Winfrey was coy about who gave it to her, but her “neighbor ‘M'” was clearly the Duchess of Sussex, who had just moved to Montecito. Being the ultimate salesperson, Winfrey wrote all of the right phrases in her caption that was really a call to action to get her followers to buy the product. “My new drink of choice for the morning and night. Wish I had @clevrblends sooner cause I would’ve added it to my Favorite Things list.”
Clevr Blends became a fairy-tale story because it eventually wound up on Oprah’s Favorite Things List two years in a row, thanks to Meghan’s introduction. It helps that the “mission-driven, women-led wellness brand” gives back to the Santa Barbara community where the royal and the TV personality live. They are able to use their power while making a difference in their own neighborhood when it comes to food justice.
The brand doesn’t flaunt its association with Meghan, though. They’ve worked hard to build the brand into the success that it is through quality ingredients and a delicious taste. Sure, the Duchess of Sussex will make a rare, and random, Instagram appearance on their account every so often, but the company is making this big move to Target based off of the hard work of CEO and co-founder Hannah Mendoza.
But, we do have to thank Mendoza for letting Meghan show off her acting chops in their 2023 end-of-year video where she played one of the Clevr Blends employees who are “the glue that literally holds us all together.” The former Suits star pretended to pack boxes, serve as an assistant grabbing Mendoza her coffee, and typing away at her desk. It shows how involved the royal is privately without taking the shine off the business Mendoza created. With their move to retail in the coming months, Meghan’s Clevr Blends investment is her first major win of 2024 — and it’s big one.
