In the lead-up to Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles‘ wedding, there was a furry of scrutiny on the couple. But after decades, new claims and alleged stories about the days before the couple’s nuptials are coming to light. One such alleged anecdote involves a significant person in Princess Diana’s life, who ultimately coaxed her into marrying Charles when she still had doubts.
Royal writer Ingrid Seward’s new book My Mother And I alleges it was Princess Diana’s father, Earl Spencer, who ultimately convinced Diana to marry Charles. Seward’s book details moments from the night of Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday, roughly one month before Diana and Charles’ wedding, in which “Diana was in despair. Her fiancé had been away in America for most of the previous week, yet he clearly had no desire to dance with her,” an excerpt published by People, via Daily Mail, reads. Elton John was performing, people were dancing, and yet Charles spent most of the night “dutifully working the room and making sure he spoke with as many people as possible,” Seward writes.

At this, Diana allegedly went back to her father’s home in the early hours of the morning feeling “distraught, flustered, angry and had no intention of ever going back. As far as Diana was concerned, the Royal Wedding was off,” per the excerpt.
“But when she explained her decision to her father, Earl Spencer, he was appalled,” Seward writes. “After calming her down, he pointed out it would be an act of gross discourtesy to break off her engagement to the future King so close to the wedding.” Ultimately, after a number of tears, the teenage Diana “allowed her father to talk her round.”
Bearing in mind all that we know now, this alleged incident makes Princess Diana and the future king’s nuptials so much more difficult to come to terms with. The couple’s wedding day seemed like the stuff of which fairy tales are made. But decades later, the fairy tale has lost its luster.
