We love a former co-star reunion as much as the next person. But few reunions also feature those same co-stars recreating one of their movie’s most memorable moments. Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner had a little 13 Going on 30 reunion at a recent Hollywood event, and the duo showed off some of their dance moves from an iconic scene in the film.
Garner was on hand to honor her former co-star during his star ceremony at The Hollywood Walk of Fame. During her remarks, Garner poked fun at Ruffalo, saying the actor owes his “rom-com success to the scruffy hair, the untucked cute button down, both of which became like the norm for cute guys everywhere for the next 20 years,” per People. She also recalled the time the All the Light We Cannot See star “tried to drop out of” 13 Going on30 during “the first rehearsal of the ‘Thriller’ dance where Mark went from kind of shocked that we actually had to do this, to antsy, to deathly quiet, to ‘Bro, this is not for me.’”
As many rom-com aficionados know, Ruffalo did indeed perform the “Thriller” dance along with Garner in the 2004 film, making it one of the most memorable moments in the movie. After her touching speech, Ruffalo and Garner posed for a few photos together. Wouldn’t you know it? They busted out some of those old “Thriller” dance moves. They’ve still got it.
Ruffalo and Garner starred in 13 Going on 30 roughly 20 years ago. We know; we think it’s hard to believe, too. All these years later, it’s fun to see the duo reunite for such a special occasion. And it’s been an even bigger year for Ruffalo.
The actor earned rave reviews in 2023 for his performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’s film Poor Things, co-starring Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. For his work, Ruffalo earned his fourth Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. (He’s previously been nominated in the category for Spotlight [2015], Foxcatcher [2014], and The Kids Are All Right [2010].) Ruffalo’s star in Hollywood may have risen, but he’ll always be Matty Flamhaff to us.
