The U.K. is calling for Prince Harry, but it certainly isn’t the royal family — it’s the British government. They have been so thrilled to watch the growth of the Duke of Sussex’s Invictus Games that they are bidding to land the 2027 event even without the assistance of anyone at the palace.
Prince Harry, who is expected to be in the U.K. in May to honor the 10th anniversary of the first games, has the support of the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Defence, and the Royal British Legion to bring the sporting event home. “It feels like the right time and the right place. The biggest power of recovery has always been in sport, has always been in Invictus and the Duke of Sussex led the way when he set these Games up ten years ago,” Johnny Mercer, the minister for veterans’ affairs told The Times. “It feels like a natural rounding of the circle to come back to the UK and we’re going to do everything we can to win the bid.”
Prince Harry is reportedly “comfortable coming back for a British-based Invictus Games,” and a source claimed that “the Games have always had the support of the rest of the royal family.” But do they really? The royal family hasn’t shown any support for Harry’s endeavors since he and Meghan Markle left their positions at the palace. Of course, they weren’t going to triumph the Duke of Sussex’s memoir, Spare, but they could have publicly acknowledged the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany last summer.
Vancouver and Whistler, Canada have the 2025 Invictus Games, but Washington is battling it out with Birmingham, England for the 2027 event. Yes, the U.S. loves Prince Harry as evidenced by his warm welcome at the NFL Honors ceremony last week. He gave Pittsburgh Steelers player Cameron Heyward the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, but the athlete seemed to be more excited by the presence of royalty. “Prince freakin’ Harry,” he gushed to the audience. “I’m in shock. That’s Prince Harry.”
With the unfortunate start to 2024 for the royal family, that’s probably the last thing they want to hear about Prince Harry. He’s finding his footing in the U.S., and people actually enjoy the impact that he’s making here. The Invictus Games is going to be a big part of his legacy, but the royal family hasn’t given him any love for his achievements.
