Michael Cera Revealed That This A-List Star Was Supposed To Have a Cameo in Barbie & We’re Shocked

Movie fans are still hearing about the phenomenon of Barbie because it’s in the mix for eight Oscars this award show season. The cast has been out there campaigning to Academy voters with Q&A panels talking about the process of making the film, and star Michael Cera dropped a bombshell about the A-list star who was supposed to make a cameo in the blockbuster movie — it’s a name you wouldn’t expect.

Fans will remember Cera as Allan, the one guy who refused to be a Ken and adopt their misogynistic ways. Well, the 35-year-old actor shared that he “wasn’t even supposed to fight in the movie” which came during Ryan Gosling’s character’s big song, “I’m Just Ken.” Cera tried to keep a secret during the panel last week, but just couldn’t keep the tea to himself, according to The A.V. Club. “Am I allowed to say what it was supposed to be? It was supposed to be Ben Affleck,” he dished. “Right? Am I allowed to say that?”

Cera didn’t have any specific details on who Affleck would have played. Would he have been a Ken? Would he have been on Allan’s side? Fans may never know unless director Greta Gerwig comes to the rescue. However, Cera did seem to know why Affleck exited the project. “I think Ben wanted to do it, but he was directing his movie,” he said. We are going to guess that the Dunkin’ Donuts spokesperson was working on his Michael Jordan sneaker movie, Air, and it sounds like his departure happens at “the 11th hour.”

That’s when Cera was brought into the scene which was surprising since Allan was only supposed to be a lover, not a fighter. “They’re like, ‘Okay, Ben’s out, something has to happen here. So you’re gonna fight them.’ So I had to jump in with the stunt team,” he continued. “I had just gotten over COVID and they had me training, and I almost died. Just doing the warm up! I had to lay down in my trailer and they sent the nurse to see me, and I was sent home. So then we had a second rehearsal, and I learned it. That’s the story basically. That was never part of Allan’s journey.”

Now that moviegoers have one side of the missed-opportunity story, it’s time for Gerwig and Affleck to give their version of events to the cameo that didn’t happen. Who knew Barbie was going to have this many layers to her tale? Our feminist queen just keeps on giving!
