Nicole Kidman Opened up About the Major Career Milestone That Was Actually Pretty Bitter-Sweet

We always want to celebrate those major moments in our lives with the ones we love. But sometimes, our personal lives and our professional goals don’t line up. Nicole Kidman recently opened up about how one massive career milestone was actually pretty bitter-sweet for one particular reason.

Let’s take it all the way back to the 2003 Oscars, where Kidman took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as noted author Virginia Woolf in the film The Hours. At the time, Kidman was two years removed from her marriage to Tom Cruise, and was feeling, well, lonely. Yes, she did have members of her family to celebrate her, but there was something else missing.

“I need a new life. Please,” Kidman recalls thinking during her interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show. “I’m sitting here and I don’t have anyone, as I say, to jump on the bed with. There’s certain times when you just go, ‘I need to jump on the bed,'” she said.

All Kidman wanted to do was “order French fries and a burger and celebrate this with my lover and I don’t have one. Help,” she said with a bit of laughter. Looking back on the night, Kidman recalls feeling “awkward” at the post-Oscars parties. “I’m so embarrassed because you walk through the party with your Oscar and you’re like, I mean, I’m Australian. You don’t walk around with a trophy going, ‘Hey, didn’t I do well?'” Kidman said.

“Now I look back and go, ‘Oh my god.’ I would carry that thing above my head and be like, ‘Thank you,'” she said. While the moment was surely difficult at the time, Kidman eventually found love again with Keith Urban just two years later, when they met in January 2005. Since then, Kidman’s always had someone by her side to celebrate life’s moments and help her through those tougher chapters.
