Ali Wong‘s has arrived as an official fashion girlie with her stunning Iris van Herpen gown at the 2024 SAG Awards. The black-and-white ensemble with its “cascading fiberglass wings,” as described by Vogue, was easy design for a runway show yet so complicated for an awards show. So, Wong’s stylist Tara Swennen came up with a plan.
The duo knew they needed a major red carpet to debut van Herpen’s “exquisite piece of art,” but it couldn’t be any red carpet. The Golden Globes, the Primetime Emmys, and the SAG Awards all fit the description, but the wings project out six feet — and Wong would have probably poked boyfriend Bill Hader in the eye. The SAG Awards were far out enough in the awards show cycle to give them time to hash out the details.
“This dress required a major carpet, and so I said, We can do some Tetris,” Swennen told the outlet. “I have to get a pass to go with her [to the red carpet.] We’ll have her do the carpet, and then I’m going to remove [the wings] and take them home myself.” Yes, the wings have their own red-carpet handler — that’s what we call VIP service! Wong will be wingless inside the Shrine Auditorium in Downtown Los Angeles, but we imagine her table mates and anyone sitting behind her appreciates the thought that went into executing this plan.
While this haute couture design won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, Swennen knew from the moment she saw it that Wong could pull off the fierce attitude needed to wear this dress. “It’s an exquisite piece of art. I love the architecture of it all, I love the movement of it all—the idea of it swaying down the carpet,” she explained. “I just knew that she was the fearless person that was going to pull it off.” Describing the Beef star as “chameleon,” she noted that Wong is a client who “really, really loves to take risks and have fun with fashion.”
That flair for fashion is something “fairly new” to Wong. She’s becoming not only a hot star to watch in Hollywood, but also fan favorite for her dramatic appreciation for fashion.
