We Can’t Stop Watching Emma Stone’s Incredible Reaction to Lily Gladstone’s SAG Award Win

Last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards had everything: daring fashion, thoughtful acceptance speeches, and history-making wins. Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American actor to win a SAG Award for an individual performance, taking home the statuette for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon. As her name was announced, Gladstone’s fellow nominee, Emma Stone, had the best reaction, and we can’t stop watching the incredibly sweet video.

Jessica Chastain announced Gladstone’s win to a round of applause and an out-of-her-seat reaction from Stone, who was nominated in the same category for her performance in the film Poor Things. In the video, which you can watch below, Stone literally jumped out of her seat when Gladstone’s name was called, clapping her hands vigorously and beaming. Gladstone’s reaction could only be described as true surprise, soaking in the moment and processing her history-making win while the crowd gave her a standing ovation.

Gladstone’s acceptance speech highlighted the “solidarity” of unions following the SAG and Writers Guild of America 2023 strikes and focused on the importance of storytelling. “It’s truly a gift that we get to do this for a living,” Gladstone said. “We bring empathy into a world that so much needs it. It’s so easy to distance ourselves. It’s so easy to close off, to stop feeling,” she continued.

“And we all bravely keep feeling and that humanizes people. That brings people out of the shadows. It brings visibility,” she said. Gladstone thanked “all of the compassionate souls in this room and all of the story tellers here tonight,” adding, “keep speaking your truths and keep speaking up for each other.”

Gladstone’s awards season journey has been full of history-making moments. Though the Oscars are still weeks away, the actress has already made history, becoming for the first Native American woman nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. It’s been a thrilling awards season thus far, so here’s hoping Gladstone’s history-making streak isn’t over.
