Swifties thought they had the Taylor Swift–Travis Kelceromance timeline all figured out when Kansas City Chiefs coach Dave Merritt entered the chat and dropped some jaw-dropping information. The “Shake It Off” singer’s first game was not Sept. 24, that was just the first time fans saw her at a football game.
“When she started to come around, it was privately. She was coming into the stadiums without people really knowing until the camera put a big spotlight on it,” Merritt said on the The Sports Shop with Reese and K-Mac podcast last week. What makes this news even more surprising is that it took a week for Merritt’s revelations to even reach fans’ ears — everyone was too busy looking at the snapshots of Swift and Kelce enjoying a day at the Sydney Zoo in Australia.
It’s wild to think that the Swifties missed a huge Easter egg right in front of them. How did the 34-year-old pop star make it into a game without anyone seeing? Merritt didn’t elaborate on how they kept her visits on the down-low, but he had lovely things to say about her presence this season.
“She actually affected the team in a positive way. It wasn’t a negative way. Everybody was excited that Travis was happy. So, when my player, my brother, is happy beside me that helps me and that encourages me,” Merritt added. “Travis came in there a different man.” He also considers Swift “a part of our family” — Chiefs Kingdom runs a tight ship!
Now, everyone has to go back to the drawing board and rewrite their romantic history. We know Kelce went to her Eras Tour concert in July at Arrowhead Stadium, and some type of introduction happened by a mystery friend a few days later. Swift confirmed to Time last year that “we started hanging out right after that.” So, she and Kelce (and their inner circle) did a good job of keeping things ultra-private. “We actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other,” she noted. It’s time to figure out how many secret games Swift attended!
