While time may heal all wounds, even small things like a scent, or a picture, might bring up some buried memories and feelings. For Britney Spears, who recently apologized and supported her ex Justin Timberlake, hearing him diss her apology did just that.
As a reminder, Spears made a statement towards the singer on Instagram in late January. “If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry,” the “Toxic” singer wrote. “I am in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish.’”
And while this seemed like a genuine olive branch for the two to finally bury the hatchet, Timberlake mocked her apology in a February show. “I want to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely f—nobody,” Timberlake said before performing “Cry Me a River.”
Now, sources close to Spears are revealing how she actually felt about it. “Britney was annoyed after his onstage statement,” a source told Us Weekly.
According to the source, the diss especially hurt because it felt like the two were finally making progress and moving on from their rocky relationship. “[They] seemed [like] they were both moving forward but when he made fun of her apology it triggered her,” the source detailed.
As for why it triggered the singer, sources explained that her split with Timberlake in 2002 was a “turning point for her mental issues.” “[Spears] thought they’d be together forever and have children,” the source added, noting that their split was equally surprising as it was heartbreaking for her. “So when he broke up with her, it shook her world,” the source said.
So, of course, being mistreated by the same person who made you feel that way brought her feelings to the surface. “Those close to her wish Justin was more of a stand-up guy and would have just moved on because what he did really hinders her recovery,” the source said.
Our hearts are with Spears as she recovers from this setback.
