If you’ve ever lost someone close to you, then you know that grief is an unpredictable and endlessly bumpy journey. And while time may heal some wounds, there’s no such thing as a rulebook on how to continue living without someone you love.
For Kelly Rizzo, Bob Saget‘s widow following his unexpected passing in 2022, she’s learning how to mourn first-hand, and the world hasn’t been afraid to criticize her every move. Most recently, she’s caught some slack after announcing her relationship with Clueless actor Breckin Meyer.
So, in a recent TikTok, Rizzo set the record straight. “I’m gonna start by saying that unless you are a widow or a widower, you truly have absolutely no place and no right to comment on this because you do not know what it’s like,” Rizzo said. “You just don’t understand the incredibly complex and difficult and dynamic thoughts and feelings that come up during this entire process.”
Rizzo then went on to say when she first started thinking about dating, she was filled with guilt. Saget’s friends and family, however, championed her throughout it all. “In my situation, it was Bob’s daughters, Bob’s friends. They were saying, ‘It’s OK.’ So I’m like, ‘OK, it must be OK,” she remembered.
“But you still need to feel OK with it and [have] peace with it in your heart,” she continued.
Rizzo then admitted she took some time to feel comfortable with the idea of jumping back into the dating pool. “I didn’t personally get to that point until well after a year after Bob had passed,” she said. “And then I didn’t start dating until 18 months or so after Bob passed.”
“For every person it’s different, sometimes men move on just a couple of months after their spouse passes away, and sometimes people never do,” she added. “And the point is whatever feels right to you because you know how important your loved one was in your life. As long as you’re honoring that and honoring them and being true to your feelings… then you can’t be doing it wrong.”
“Whether somebody moves on a month after or ten years after does not diminish or take away from the love and relationship you had with your partner,” she continued.
As for her relationship with Meyer, which debuted at a Grammy Awards Viewing Party in February, Rizzo said the actor has been more than open about giving her continued space to grieve. “I was fortunate that I was able to find someone who holds space for that and appreciates and gets it and is strong enough and confident enough to know that Bob’s always gonna be a part of my life,” Rizzo continued. Looks like she’s found her perfect match!
