Prince William Can’t Escape Affair Rumors Now That They’ve Spread to Mainstream Media

Prince William has been haunted by the unverified rumors about his affair with Kate Middleton’s former BFF, Rose Hanbury. No one has ever been able to substantiate that infidelity between the two of them ever took place, but the gossip has persisted among royal watchers. Yet in the wake of conspiracy theories surrounding the Princess of Wales after her surgery, the alleged relationship between William and Hanbury has officially hit the mainstream media.

On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert decided to sip some royal tea on The Late Show and get his audience up to speed on what has been unfolding on social media over the last few weeks. The late-night talk show host blamed the “internet sleuths” for dredging up a few possible skeletons in William’s closet. He said the social media detectives believe Kate’s “absence may be related to her husband and the future king of England, William, having an affair.” That’s when Colbert’s tone got a bit snarky and he joked while holding a cup of tea, “Oh no. My heart goes out to poor Kate. Now let’s dish the hot goss, I am ready to spill the tea!”

Colbert dove into explaining the players and the fact that this rumor has been buzzing around palace walls since 2019. He showed a Cosmopolitan headline about Kate reportedly asking William about his involvement with Hanbury and “he laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it.” Colbert then trolled the future king by noting, “Always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating.” When the royal family has reached this mainstream level of mockery, that’s when you know the narrative has not just gone off the rails — it’s a 50-car pileup.

It’s important to note that British publications were issued stern warnings from the royal family’s legal team, Harbottle and Lewis, back in 2019 when they started commenting on the alleged rumors, according to The Daily Beast. Even the royal family’s nemesis, author Omid Scobie, has gone on record to say that William and Hanbury’s affair “appears to be nonsense.” He told The Zoomer Book Club last December, “There are times when I discuss the rumors themselves – the fallout with Rose Hanbury, allegedly, for example – but I don’t spend a second talking about whether it’s true or not, because in my mind, unless you can come to me with evidence, it’s B.S.”

Even with major royal experts saying they’ve researched the topic endlessly; the royal fans still think something went on with William and Hanbury. An alleged affair would provide a simple explanation for Kate and Hanbury’s reported fallout, but right now, the royal family has bigger issues on their hands. Now that Colbert is in on the action, the palace has to find a way to stop their messy publicity train from causing another wreck.
