One of the more shocking stories in Prince Harry‘s memoir, Spare, last year involved an alleged physical altercation between him and his older brother, Prince William. The fight started over the Prince of Wales’ negative opinion of his sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, where Harry claimed William was a “parrot [of] the press narrative” as his brother described the Duchess of Sussex as “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.”

While the headlines have simmered about Harry’s book, it seems that the Daily Mail is giving William’s temper a second look. They took a deep dive into Robert Lacey’s royal biography, Battle of Brothers, where the author also chronicled the Prince of Wales’ reputation for being hot-headed.

“He has proved no Sweet William when roused,’ wrote Lacey, via the Daily Mail. “In the years after her 2005 marriage to Prince Charles, Camilla recounted to members of her own family and close friends her surprise at discovering this unexpected side to Prince Charming – ‘the boy’s got a temper!‘ Charles’s wife was horrified at the ranting and raving that William unleashed on occasion against her husband in her presence.”

Lacey described the father-son fights as “shattering” with “William doing the shouting and Charles submitting meekly on the receiving end.” Camilla felt that “William held nothing back” during those battles, but the Daily Mail pointed out that the future king’s temper tantrums are “largely hidden” from public view these days (perhaps some Royal Rota protection?). But back in the day, his mother, Princess Diana, wasn’t even immune to her son’s outbursts.

After her infamous 1995 Panorama interview, “all hell broke loose” as William “started shouting and crying and when she tried to put her arms around him, he shoved her away.” Lacey wrote, “‘Diana was getting a taste of how William’s intensity could lead to his notorious rages. The following day, he apologized to his mother for his temper with a small bunch of flowers.”

These stories are seeing the light of day again, and it almost feels like a warning shot to Prince William from the British tabloids. Is the Royal Rota no longer protecting him and his image? That’s sure how it feels as the tide has turned against Kensington Palace’s PR blunder in handling Kate Middleton’s health crisis. There appears to be a much different tone to the headlines lately, and it doesn’t bode well for the royal family, particularly Prince William.
