It sounds like Rose Hanbury has had enough. The Marchioness of Cholmondeley has been the subject of unverified rumors for years that she and Kate Middleton had a falling out over her alleged affair with Prince William, but when #KateGate took on a life of its own and hit the mainstream media, Hanbury came out swinging!
She has already shut down the story, via her lawyers, with a firm note to Business Insider that “the rumours are completely false.” Now, she’s addressing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The late-night talk show host spilled the alleged tea during his March 12 monologue and the clip went viral on a global level. It was the first time a major U.S. show addressed the longtime rumors, and the situation took a curious turn. In Touch has confirmed that Hanbury’s lawyers are on the case with a legal notice to shut down any further sketches.
“The rumor appears to have entered into the mainstream media recently as a result of another joke made about it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We have written on our client’s behalf to CBS and various other reputable media organisations to confirm that the allegation is false,” the statement to In Touch reads. Colbert spared no one in his opening set because, at that point, the royal family drama had reached a fever pitch on social media.
“Internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband, and the future King of England, William, having an affair,” Colbert joked. “I think we all know who the alleged other woman is, say it with me, The Marchioness of Cholmondeley. Now there have been rumors of an affair between William and [Rose] since 2019. According to tabloids, back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he ‘laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it.’ Aha, always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating.”
Despite the internet insisting that an affair between Hanbury and Prince William did happen, royal author Omid Scobie addressed rumors in his 2023 book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival. He isn’t the biggest fan of the royal family, but he defended both Hanbury and the Prince of Wales in this situation. “There are times when I discuss the rumors themselves – the fallout with Rose Hanbury, allegedly, for example – but I don’t spend a second talking about whether it’s true or not, because in my mind, unless you can come to me with evidence, it’s B.S,” he said to The Zoomer Book Club last December.
With Scobie, and now Hanbury, on the case, it sounds like it’s time for everyone to move away from this particular royal conspiracy theory.
