Legal Experts Reveal Whether Rose Hanbury Is Able to Sue Stephen Colbert Over His Monologue

Despite the affair rumors persisting for half a decade now, Rose Hanbury has only recently spoken out against them for the first time this past month. Not only did she issue a statement through her lawyers, blasting the rumor she had an affair with Prince William, but she even sent a legal notice to Stephen Colbert.

During the March 12 monologue on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert discussed the rumors, which have led to Hanbury’s lawyers sending a notice to shut down any further sketches, per In Touch. Now, because of this, the legal world is talking: does she have a case here? Well, Neama Rahmani, CEO of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told UsMagazine that she may not have a case.

“She potentially can, Christina, but I don’t think it’s gonna be that good of a case. This is why these rumors have been going on for quite some time. Obviously, they resurfaced recently because of Kate’s disappearance and a doctored photo for some period of time,” Rahmani said. “Rose and Kate have a relationship; there appears to have been a falling out. But if you really go back and listen to what Stephen Colbert said, he was really just saying they’re rumors and people are speculating, you know no different than you and I are here on the show.”

He added, “We’re just reporting what other people are speculating. We’re not saying the rumors are true, that Rose had an affair with William or putting out a definitive statement. Because of the nuanced nature of what Colbert said, I don’t think it’s gonna be a good defamation case.”

Now, for those wondering: what the heck did Colbert say?! We got you. He said on March 12, “I think we all know who the alleged other woman is, say it with me: The Marchioness of Cholomondeley” (which he intentionally mispronounced and linked to an article from the Independent and The Cut). He added, “What a beautiful name that I’m being told I pronounced incorrectly, it is in fact pronounced, ‘Chumley.’ Counterpoint: no it’s not.”

He added, “Now, there have been rumors of an affair between William and the Marching Band of Chicanery since 2019… When tabloids covered it, they said ‘Kate supposedly confronted him about it, He apparently laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it.’ Aha, always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating.”

Then he made a knock-knock joke, saying, “Knock knock, who’s there? oh it’s my illegitimate son, I’ve knocked up my mistress.”

So, for those who don’t know, Hanbury and Kate were friends for years, and in 2019, the Sun published a piece saying the two had a falling out. Then, writers Giles Coren and Nicole Cliffe both claimed they knew about the alleged affair between William and Hanbury in 2019, per IBTimes. Rumors swirled that the affair was going on since 2017.

Keep in mind: there has been no physical or tangible proof of an affair besides deleted tweets and hearsay.
