When we look back at Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst‘s era as Peter Parker and MJ in the Spider-Man movies, there’s one scene that always comes to mind: the upside-down kissing scene. After all, in addition to being a romantic moment for the characters, the gravity-defying kiss had couples recreating the moment all over the world.
Remembering the scene many years later, however, it seems like shooting it was quite a nightmare for Dunst. “I remember [the film’s director] Sam Raimi giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired,” the actress said in a recent episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, per The Independent. “He really wanted to make it special even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it.”
As for why the moment was so harrowing for the actress, it’s safe to say the environment was quite uncomfortable. “It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him,” she remembered.
Watching this scene now, we could never guess. Oh, the power of movie magic!
Prior to her kissing scene confession, Dunst also admitted that she’d be open to revisiting the superhero world in the future. “Yes,” Dunst quickly told Marie Claire earlier this year. “Because you get paid a lot of money, and I have two children, and I support my mother.”
As a reminder, Dunst shares sons Ennis, 5, and James, 2, with partner and fellow actor Jesse Plemons.
Previously, the actress revealed she “would never say no” to becoming MJ again either. “I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies,” she joked to Variety back in 2021.
So, while the kissing scene might’ve been quite uncomfortable, it’s safe to Dunst hasn’t let it scare her from the franchise either.
