Kevin Coster Just Got a Huge Stamp of Approval From Hollywood Ahead of His Movie Comeback

After a rough year with a contentious divorce and an on-again, off-again exit from Yellowstone last year, Kevin Costner is set for a major comeback in Hollywood. His big-screen return in Horizon, an American Saga just got a major stamp of approval from one of the entertainment industry’s most prestigious film festivals.

The Costner-directed movie is headed for the Cannes Film Festival in May. The four-part project will have the two sections released this summer in the theaters — the first part on June 28, and the second installment on Aug. 16. Only the first picture will be previewed in France, and it will be a non-competition movie, meaning it isn’t up for the coveted Palme D’Or prize. The 69-year-old actor seemed pretty moved by the honor in a statement to Variety.

“I’d like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon, an American Saga in this year’s selection,” Costner emotionally expressed in the statement. “It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come. Horizon, an American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film…”

Costner is heavily invested in the franchise and even mortgaged 10 acres of waterfront Santa Barbara estate to make the movie happen because he couldn’t find “anybody to make” his vision happen. “I was going to build my last house,” he explained to Francis Ford Coppola in a 2023 Deadline interview about taking out a mortgage instead of starting construction. “But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f**king conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

The Oscar winner understands that he’s gambling on his hard-earned fortune, but he’s willing to take that risk. “At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller, and I went ahead and put my own money into it,” Costner admitted. “I’m not a very good businessman, so, scratch your head, if you will. I don’t know why, but I have not let go of this one. I’ve pushed it into the middle of the table three times in my career and didn’t blink.” His artistic instincts are now taking him to Cannes.
