In 2020, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky became one of music’s biggest power couples. And, two kids and four years later, the two continue to take red carpets by storm and gush about each other in interviews.
In a recent talk with stylist Mel Ottenberg for Interview Magazine, however, the “Love on the Brain” singer remembered their first years together, and why she wasn’t all in with the relationship to start.
“We’ve known each other for a long time. I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships,” Rihanna said. “We’ve seen each other outside of relationships. We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts.”
But while those experiences made her weary, Rihanna was still interested in giving their connection a try. “We started dating with a lot of caution,” she stated.
After all, the rapper and the singer had gotten to know each other quite well over the years. “We saw fashion the same. We saw creative the same. We ended up in the same circles a lot,” Rihanna said of their relationship before dating. “And past that, when we grew up, we ended up supporting each other’s brands and products and creative all the time. I would wear his s–, he would show up to my launches.”
So, when the two started dating, Rihanna knew there was something special between them, even if it didn’t end up working out. “I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen,” she said of their beginning. “It was just, ‘This is a flower. It’s either going to die or blossom. But I’m going to let it decide itself.'”
Luckily, her hope-for-the-best-prepare-for-the-worst attitude worked out, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic tested their yet blossoming connection.
“COVID sped up our relationship, which I felt like god knew we needed because we were going to start a family,” she reflected. “And had it not been for COVID, we would’ve taken a lot more time to get comfortable with each other, to even know that we were ready.”
As for their choice to start a family, Rihanna admitted it was a mutual decision they didn’t really discuss. “I mean, we didn’t even really talk about it. There was no denying it,” she said. “It was the best thing that ever happened to us. It just happened.”
