Gwyneth Paltrow has done her best to shout her friendship with Dakota Johnson from the rooftops but a source claims the Goop founder wasn’t always on good terms with ex-husband Chris Martin‘s reported fiancée.
Johnson, 34, has been dating the Coldplay frontman since 2017, three years after he split from Paltrow, 51. The pair announced their “conscious uncoupling” in 2014, after ten years of marriage, and vowed to amicably co-parent their two kids — Apple, now 19, and Moses, 18.
While Paltrow moved on with now-husband Brad Falchuk later in 2014, and married him in 2018, it’s never easy when an ex starts dating someone new, is it? So, understandably, Johnson and Martin’s romance reportedly wasn’t easy on Paltrow in the beginning.
“It’s only natural to feel a certain type of way when you’re ex starts seeing someone else,” a source told UsWeekly. “So, there was some tension between Gwyneth and Dakota when she and Chris started dating.”
Another source claims Paltrow was initially “hesitant” about her ex-husband’s relationship and reportedly had concerns about their age gap — 47-year-old Martin is 13 years older than his Madame Web star fiancée.
Eventually, Paltrow came around to the romance after seeing how Johnson has bonded with her kids. “It took quite some time, but eventually, Gwyneth saw how amazing Dakota treated her kids,” the first insider said. “Seeing her love them with her whole heart really changed the way Gwyneth felt.”
“They even all hang out as one unite, travel and have big dinners together when they can. It’s a healthy dynamic,” the other source stated.
Paltrow has highlighted her friendship with the Cha Cha Real Smooth actress on Instagram over the years and Johnson even gushed about her bond with Martin’s family in an interview with Bustle earlier this year.
“I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart,” Johnson told the outlet. “I grew up in a family that was so big, and I just believe in the saying ‘Blood is thicker than water.’ The actual saying is ‘The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,’ which means that the connections with people you choose are more solid than the connections to the people you’re actually born to.”
