Back in the 80s, Michael J. Fox was one of Hollywood’s hottest commodities. In addition to starring in the box office Back to the Future hits, he also starred in award-winning shows like Spin City, and much more. So, like many celebrities over the years, he was lucky enough to meet a member of the royal family.
Talking to People about his rise to fame, Fox recalled meeting the late Princess Diana in the 1985 London premiere of Back to the Future.
“With the royal premiere of Back to the Future, I sat next to Princess Diana,” he remembered. “I realized if I was like a fake yawn and an arm stretch away from being on a date with her. That one, and just moments like that, were so surreal.”
Indeed just sitting next to the late Princess of Wales must’ve been a thrill of a lifetime. “It all got so crazy,” Fox said of his fame at the time. “There’s nothing I could think of that wouldn’t happen.”
Fox continued, talking about how his relationship with fame, and being a celebrity has changed over the years.
“There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous,'” Fox said. “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous. Right, we were different.'”
“We were tougher,” he added. “We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”
Earlier this month, Fox opened up to Entertainment Tonight about a question fans can’t stop asking themselves: will he ever consider going back to acting? “I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out,” Fox, who has been open about his journey with Parkinson’s Disease, said.
Maybe if he did, he could tell Prince William about the almost-date with his mom. Sounds like a great story to us!
