Kevin Costner Made a Hollywood Power Move Over This Younger A-List Star & He Had a Solid Reason

When you work in Hollywood, you have to shoot your shot because opportunities don’t come down the pike too often. That’s what one A-list actor did with Kevin Costner. There was a role he was dying to play in an upcoming movie directed by the Oscar winner, but he was turned down completely — and for a good reason.

The unnamed project is what Chris Hemsworth considers the job that got away. He revealed the story to Entertainment Tonight about pitching himself to Costner about why he was right for the role. “There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role],'” Hemsworth explained. “I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”

The only details he shared about the movie were that it was “a small story about a man and a woman” and a rather “abstract and interesting” script. He added, “It’s better seen in his wheelhouse for sure, as far as the kind of Western environment. There’s horses involved, he’s a horse wrangler, and my wife read it and loves horses. We have 10 or 11 horses back home and so she’s like, ‘You’ve got to do this.'” Amazingly, Hemsworth took the steps to put himself out there, but Costner shared why he turned the talented actor down.

“He’s so handsome and he’s so good,” Costner praised the Marvel Universe actor to ET. “He’s going to have to go find his [own] love story. [But] I’m glad he likes this one. If I reach a moment where I [don’t] think I could do that, I would [reach out]. He’s certainly one of our great leading men right now.” The 69-year-old actor joked that Hemsworth would have to “wait his turn” while noting “As long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it.” Fair enough! There aren’t enough love stories geared toward men and women over 50, so Costner is the right person to tell this tale. (Just make the love interest age-appropriate, please.)

As the old saying goes, “Rejection is redirection,” so this might be the opportunity of a lifetime for Hemsworth to discover the script of his dreams. In the end, he might find that Costner did him a favor, but fans will just have to wait until that perfect romantic script lands in Hemworth’s lap.
