Cher Could Have Dated This Music Icon But Her Gut Instincts Told Her To Stay Away

At 77, Cher is one of the music industry’s most treasured icons and her career and personal life have been just as colorful as you would expect from a legend. Yet she still surprises fans by spilling tea about her dating life and the very famous singer she had the opportunity to date but turned him down. 

On the May 1 episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, Cher revealed that Elvis Presley wanted to take her out, but she decided it wasn’t the best move for her. “It was because I was nervous and I knew of the people around him and it wasn’t that they were bad people, it’s just that I was kind of nervous about his reputation,” the “Believe singer” explained. “I’m really shy when I’m not working and kind of shy around men.” While Cher didn’t say when Elvis asked her out on a date, it’s understandable that she might have found his iconic status and trappings of fame intimidating.

But Cher might have also spared herself lots of heartache and possibly trauma from dating Elvis. Priscilla Presley, who began dating Elvis at the age of 14, was constantly on high alert during their relationship because of his wandering eye. “Women gravitated to him, so I would be nervous when he had to go places alone,” she admitted to People in 2021. “I would even go with him to get his teeth cleaned! I always had an eye on him because everyone in the world was after him.” 

He had no problem having very public affairs, including his on-set romance with Ann-Margret during the filming of Viva Las Vegas in 1963. “We were indeed soul mates, shy on the outside, but unbridled within,” Ann-Margret wrote in her 1994 memoir, My Story. “It would become a force we couldn’t control.” Maybe it was Cher’s gut instinct that day that told her to stay far away, but it was probably the right move. She told Hudson on the show that she’s “really shy when I’m not working and kind of shy around men” and that’s why she enjoys dating younger men.

Cher doesn’t think twice about her almost 40-year age-gap romance with her current boyfriend, Alexander “AE” Edwards, because she loves how he makes her feel. And while she could have made Hollywood gossip history with her date with Elvis, it’s much better to know that she listened to her inner voice that day and made a decision that was right for her.
