Meghan Markle’s Extended Absence Has Been Noted by the Royal Family But Not for the Reason You Think

Prince Harry will be heading to the U.K. alone to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, marking another visit that Meghan Markle will be skipping. The Sussexes have been very clear that Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 2, will not make the trip overseas until security protocols have been strengthened. However, the royal family seems to be taking the Duchess of Sussex’s continued absence in a very different way.

The idea that Meghan would fly to Nigeria to join Prince Harry the day after his Invictus Games event in the U.K. has some palace staffers unfairly calling out her snub. “Her conspicuous absence from all his recent trips has been noted, a source told the Express. “This time she will be missing a key event in Harry’s Invictus diary as well as the opportunity to offer support to her father-in-law.” Meghan probably wants to offer all of the support she possibly can to King Charles III during his cancer battle, but she and Harry have voiced their concerns about their safety, and the palace hasn’t budged. The cost isn’t even the issue because Harry is willing to pick up the tab so the taxpayers don’t shoulder the burden.

The palace insider doesn’t seem to care about Harry and Meghan’s reasoning, though. They added, “It strikes me as odd that she doesn’t have time to come to England where however she feels about them, she does have family. But she does have time to join Harry in Africa. I think that speaks volumes.” It probably speaks volumes about Nigeria — they are willing and able to accommodate the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s security needs. The couple isn’t making up any claims that their lives are in danger in the U.K. either.

In 2022, former Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Metropolitan Police, Neil Basu, told the U.K.’s Channel 4 news that Harry and Meghan were constantly under threat when they were working for the palace. “If you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it… the kind of rhetoric that’s online, if you don’t know what I know, you would feel under threat all of the time,” he said. Basu added that the danger the couple faced was “digesting and very real.”

The Express is claiming that Meghan is “done” with the U.K. for good because she “doesn’t want the drama” associated with the royal family. However, that doesn’t have to be a permanent situation if the palace stood up for them in the British tabloids. If they address the security detail and heal the royal rift together, the U.K. may feel like a safe space again. In the meantime, Meghan is protecting her peace by taking a pass on Harry’s latest trip overseas.
