Simone Biles is done with internet trolls who won’t let one interview go. In late December, her husband Jonathan Owens caught major heat for saying “the catch” in their relationship. While a majority of the world didn’t agree with his assessment — he’s an NFL player and she’s the GOAT of gymnastics — Biles stood by her man throughout the controversy.
In April, the 27-year-old athlete then revealed on the Call Her Daddy podcast how much the backlash affected her. “I go on Twitter and everybody’s like, ‘Divorce this man, he’s mean,’” she said while admitting that, at first, she thought the memes were “hilarious.” The discourse continued for days and she “broke down” from the criticism. “I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?’ You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is,” Biles explained. “If anybody’s met him, they know he’s the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody. Talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family.”
Well, it appears that not enough people watched her interview because after the 2024 Core Hydration Gymnastics Classic on Saturday, the online fallout continued. What’s perplexing about the adverse reaction this time is that Owens was in the front row cheering on the Olympian throughout the entire event. The Chicago Bears safety was standing up, smiling, and applauding for his wife every step of the way. Biles has enough and posted an Instagram Story warning for fans who think they are helping her by cutting down Owens.
“I’m going to quickly address this, the joke was never a joke! Y’all are blatantly being disrespectful to my relationship & my husband. So I’m gonna go ahead and say this one time. Respectfully, f**k off,” she wrote. “[And] if you keep commenting or tweeting at me I’m just going to block you. Simple as that.” Of course, she wasn’t done, adding, “And no I don’t need to touch grass or whatever tf y’all suggest….@ everyone else that supports us, we love y’all so much.”
Biles needs to stay focused on the upcoming Summer Games in Paris, and it’s at the point where she’s asked people nicely and they didn’t listen. Now, she’s putting up a boundary to protect herself and her marriage — and that’s what fans need to listen to at this point. “My whole heart 🤎🤞🏾 the best supporter, I couldn’t ask for a better husband,” the gymnast captioned a carousel of snapshots from the Olympics warm-up event with Owens. And if you were really paying attention, she didn’t even put a photo of her big win up in her grid. It’s family over medals every time.
