Mindy Kaling might not be playing an active role in the upcoming reboot of The Office but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have thoughts on the revival of the comedy series that kickstarted her career.
In a May 28 interview, Kaling spoke with SheKnows’s Reshma Gopaldas about some of her career highlights and her thoughts on The Office U.S. creator Greg Daniels’s plans to develop a new mockumentary-style office comedy for Peacock.
Kaling admitted that she knows “nothing about” the details of the comedy, which is due to start filming in July, but trusts Daniels. “I think that bodes really well. He’s so talented, and I just can’t wait to see it,” she gushed adding that, even with limited knowledge, “I bet you it’s Mindy-approved.”
“It would be shocking if it wasn’t unless it was personally attacking me,” she joked.
Not much is known about the upcoming series, the official logline states that it will not be set in the beloved Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, and will instead follow “a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are speculated to be leading the new ensemble cast.
Kaling initially joined The Office as the only woman on the writing team while Daniels was developing it from the British comedy of the same name, making it her first TV writing job. She starred in the series as Kelly Kapoor and in later seasons served as an executive producer before leaving the show in 2013.
“I love the team behind it so much,” Kaling said when asked if she would ever want to be involved in some way. “So, like, if they they called me, I’m sure I would love to hear what they had in mind.”
After The Office, Kaling went on to create, write, produce and star in her own hit comedy show, The Mindy Project, which she described as “a huge leap of faith.”
“There’s so many ways that it could go wrong, and so many people telling you that it’s not going to work because historically, so few of them stay on the air,” she said. The show was a hit with fans for six seasons and cemented Kaling as a successful TV writer, giving rise to future hits Kaling-created series like Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls.
