Brooke Shields has been a staple of Hollywood for many decades now, but she’s not stopping anytime soon.
In a new interview with People, the Mother of the Bride star opened up about letting her ambition run wild in this latest phase in her life.
“I’m much more comfortable in my ambition than I used to be,” she told the outlet. “I think I used to feel embarrassed that I had an ambitious part.”
“I used to think that that was somehow something that I shouldn’t be coveting or shouldn’t be proud of because it sort of signified, ‘What more do you want?’ That was the way I sort of grew up: ‘Be happy with what you have,'” Shields explained. “‘Don’t want for more. Don’t look outside yourself. Just be thankful.’ And then you sort of get to a certain age, you’re like, ‘You know what? I do want more and I want to try for it and I want to keep going.'”
Her newfound fearlessness continues to what she also says “yes” to too. “I’ve learned I don’t want to spend time with people I don’t want to spend time with. And it’s almost not personal,” she said. “Whereas I used to feel compelled to say ‘yes’ to everybody, just running myself ragged, trying to see everybody, do everything everybody wanted.’”
“I’m much more relaxed in being myself,” she added.
As for what Shields is up to with her newfound ambition and strength, a quick look at her upcoming projects shows she already has a lot going on. On May 26, the actress was elected the newest President of Actors’ Equity, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“I promise to lead with strength & compassion, and I will stand up for you and command the respect that we deserve as an acting community,” Shields wrote on Instagram next to the announcement. “Also to those who ran, I did not run against you, I ran with and for you. I look forward to listening to you.”
“I will do everything in my power to add to your expertise and help all of you do the best we all can for our community,” she continued. “Now let’s get to work!!”
Also coming up for Shields is her hair care line, Commence, inspired by Beginning Is Now, a content platform she created during the pandemic to connect with women in their 40s and beyond, per WWD. “When I hit this age, I had a sense of accomplishment, but also this excitement that there is more to look forward to,” she told the outlet. “I wanted this optimism to be something that we all shared with regards to how we age.” We love to see it!
