While Prince William and Kate Middleton make up one of the most powerful and swoon-worthy couples now, many might forget the two had a brief break when they were still dating back in 2006. But while their break might’ve taken the British media by surprise at the time, the pair reconciled less than a year later. Now, years since their split and swift make-up, a royal insider is spilling on what really happened between them.
According to Robert Jobson, who has his new biography Catherine, the Princess of Wales coming out on August 6, William broke up with Middleton over the phone shortly after his military graduation in December 2006, per People. On the call, William claimed they needed “a bit of space” to “find our own way.”
Plus, William wasn’t ready to pop the question to Middleton just yet. “Catherine knew William wasn’t in any hurry to propose, and the truth is she was prepared to wait until he was ready,” Jobson wrote, per Daily Mail. “After all, they were in love — weren’t they?”
But, instead of taking his time, William called for a break. “In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, they both acknowledged they were on ‘different pages,'” Jobson wrote. “It was a devastating blow to Catherine, who felt doubly let down at being dumped over the phone.”
As a result, Middleton looked to her friends and family for support and good ol’ distraction. “She turned to old friends for support, going on holiday with a girlfriend to Ibiza. They partied long into the night,” Jobson told The Independent. “Back in London, there were soon so many paparazzi shots of Catherine leaving nightclubs – often with her sister Pippa – that the media dubbed them the ‘Sizzler Sisters’.”
But as Middleton’s party days continued, she crossed paths with William again. According to Jobson, the two reunited in a “Freakin Naughty”-themed costume party thrown by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen.
“She’d arrived dressed as a nurse, and William had made a beeline for her,” Jobson described. “They then spent the first part of the evening deep in conversation before hitting the dance floor, where they ended up kissing.” Looks like William couldn’t get Middleton out of his mind all along.
The two quickly reconciled and were engaged by 2010. And the rest is history!
