Almost a year after Sandra Bullock announced her break from acting in 2022, she lost her life partner, Bryan Randall, on Aug. 5, 2023, to the effects of ALS. Since then, she’s taken the year off to grieve and be there for her two children, Louis, 14, and Layla, 11. And now, almost a year’s since his passing, Bullock is slowly making her way back into the spotlight, and her latest appearance is as heartwarming as it gets.
On the Aug. 12 show of the Today Show, co-host Hoda Kotb got a sweet birthday message from The Proposal star herself.
“I had so many brilliant and funny things prepared for you for this message that were just going to slay, but you know girl, I’m just too tired,” the Oscar winner said.
As a reminder, Kotb was celebrating turning 60, a milestone Bullock achieved last month on July 26.
“I’m tired because I had to make my way up that mountain before you got there so I could check out the terrain and see what things look like, and just get the feel so I can fill you in,” Bullock joked. “And it’s weird because people seem to want us to be afraid of what it might look like when we get there. Turns out it’s pretty damn great. It’s pretty awesome.”

Bullock continued her heartfelt message with some kind words about her close friend.
“Thank you for being so incredible to so many people,” she said. “What you do for a living and how you have to shape-shift every single day, how you navigate your kindness, even when that’s not what’s coming your way. How you are to those you care about and how you keep them safe, and just who you are as a human being. We’re all pretty lucky to have you, especially your kids.” Kotb is a mom to daughters Hope, 2, and Hayley, 4.
“Happy birthday, my sweet friend,” the Oscar winner said as she wrapped up. “Thank you for allowing me to be in your circle, I feel very grateful. And I have your bar set up, up here, so we can look at the view. It’s pretty beautiful, but I need you up here. Happy birthday.”
As the video left the screen, Kotb was clearly emotional. “The reason that I have Haley and Hope is because when I was looking for inspiration of somebody who was a mom at my age, Sanda Bullock popped up and I called her and I said, ‘Tell me about motherhood,’ and she said, ‘It is the best decision I ever made,'” Kotb revealed to co-host Jenna Bush Hager. “And from that moment forward, she led the way to these two girls.”
Looks like these two best friends have impacted each other immensely, one way or another.
Prior to Bullock’s surprise appearance for Kotb’s birthday, sources were already indicating Bullock’s return to Hollywood.
“Sandra’s gradually reemerging into public life,” an Us Weekly source shared. “She’s excited about what the future holds. She’s ready to get back in the game.”
First up is a sequel to her 1998 hit, Practical Magic, with Nicole Kidman. “Sandra missed acting,” the source said. She’s reportedly also looking to work with other familiar faces from her movie history, including Keanu Reeves, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Grant. “Sandra values working with longtime friends in the industry,” they added.
Bullock is really putting herself and her friends first right now and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. The more we see of her, the better!
