When Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their split after seven years of marriage last year, we couldn’t help but ask ourselves what went wrong. So, of course, journalists have poked and prodded both Vergara and Manganiello about it ever since. And, as it turns out, they have quite different opinions on what really went down.
In January, Vergara got quite specific about their divorce in an interview with El País. “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” the Modern Family star told the outlet.
A few months later, in July, Manganiello denied her comments, saying Vergara’s claim that differing opinions on having kids caused their divorce was “simply not true,” the True Blood star told Men’s Journal.
“We did try to have a family for the first year and a half,” he told the magazine. “And we had a huge conversation right out of the gate during the first month we dated. I said, ‘If you’re done with kids, then I understand. Just tell me, and I’ll know what this is, and that’s okay,’” he remembered. “But that wasn’t the case with her.”
“I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn’t work out,” he added. “And I didn’t.”
Manganiello then continued, adding that these different opinions on having children together become one of their major problems. “[Kids] wasn’t inevitably why everything ended,” Manganiello asserted. “It’s because two people grew apart, and sometimes that happens.”
Looking at these two interviews side-by-side, it’s safe to say fans of the couple weren’t too sure what to believe. Did they not break up because of kids? What other problems do they have?
With all these questions floating around since July, Vergara got asked what really happened in a new interview with Variety. Sadly, her answer failed to make things any more clear.
“At the end of the day, you never even know if that’s what he said for real,” Vergara told the outlet, hinting that media outlets often twist or edit a celebrity’s answer to fit their narrative. “I’ve read a lot of things that I’ve said that I’m like, Huh?’”
As a result, Vergara’s giving him the benefit of the doubt about those quotes, but doesn’t really want to confront him about it either. “What am I gonna do, call him? I don’t know if he even said that,” she said.
In other words, Vergara might not agree with what Manganiello said, and have a completely different version of how it all went down, but she’s not paying too much attention to it either. Safe to say that Vergara, who’s currently dating orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman, is ready to move on.
