For longtime fans ofStar Wars, the movies mean a lot. Whether it feels like a piece of your childhood, your introduction to the genre, or even your sexual awakening, Star Wars made a mark in quite a few generations. For one of the stars Mark Hamill, however, the movie reminds him of just one thing: his late co-star Carrie Fisher.
In a recent appearance at Fan Expo Chicago, Hamill talked about her unexpected passing in 2016, and how he’s never looked at their movies together the same way ever since.
“It forever altered how I reacted to Star Wars in general,” he said, per The New York Post. “The heart was gone.”
While getting emotional as he spoke, Hamill broke down how important Fisher’s character Princess Leia was at the time. “I thought that it was effortless feminism to have the princess be far from a shrinking violet,” he said. “She was tough, she was telling Darth Vader off to his face. She was not intimidated by Darth Vader in the slightest.”
“When [Harrison Ford and I] rescued her, she made chumps out of Luke and Han,” Hamill continued. “‘You call this a rescue? Gimme that gun!’ And she made us look like two stooges.”
This isn’t the first time Hamill has spoken out about Fisher’s incredible legacy since her passing. In May 2023, he even made our eyes water at Fisher’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.
“Carrie was one of a kind,” Hamill said in his speech, per Variety. “She belonged to us all, whether we liked it or not. She was our princess, dammit!”
“And the actress who played her blurred into one gorgeous, fearlessly independent, ferociously funny, take-charge woman who took our collective breath away,” he continued. “Determined and tough, but with a vulnerability that made you root for her and want her to succeed and be happy. She played such a crucial role in my professional and personal life. Both would’ve been far emptier without her.
“Was she a handful? Was she high maintenance? No doubt,” he hilariously continued. “But everything would’ve been so much drabber and less interesting if she hadn’t been the friend that she was.”
“I’ll never stop missing her, but I’m so thankful we had her as long as we did,” he said. “I’m grateful for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness, and even the bratty, self-indulgent crap my beloved space twin drove me crazy with through the years. So thank you, Carrie. I love you.” Talk about an incredible friend, from a galaxy far, far away, and beyond.
